Is it possible to make your period appear overnight?

Is there really a way to get your period to start overnight? WUKA experts discuss whether there is a way to get your period to arrive overnight.

Is It Possible To Make Your Period Start Overnight?

We’ll get straight to the point. Wondering how to get periods overnight? Sorry, but its probably another period myth that needs debunking. That said- you can, however, regulate your cycle, making it more predictable and less irregular overall.

So read on for some solid advice on what to do if your cycle is erratic, and your period seems to turn up at random times during the month!

What is an irregular period?

First, a word on irregular periods. Your period is classed as such if there is no reliable pattern to your cycle. A regular cycle is one that lasts anywhere between 28 to 38 days. So the time between your periods could vary greatly from oner person to another- that’s completely normal. What makes your period irregular, is if the length of your cycle varies form month to month.

So if you experience a 28 day cycle one month (with day one being the first day of your period, and the last day being the day before your next period) then 35 days the next month, followed by 21 days the months after that… that’s an irregular cycle.

The best way to know whether or not your periods are irregular is to track your cycle. You can use an app on your phone, or just a plain calendar if you wish. The idea is to track at least 3 cycles so that you can see what’s happening and make a decision as to whether to not your cycle is irregular. Then, you can take steps to find out why and to potentially regulate it.

What causes irregular periods?

Irregular periods can be down to a number of reasons, and sometimes you might experience a cycle or two that’s just ‘off’ for no apparent reason at all. On the whole, irregular periods are caused by:

  • Certain medicines, such as the contraceptive pill or other medications you may be taking.
  • Hormonal imbalances, such as during menopause or with certain conditions such as PCOS
  • Medical conditions, such as Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) or Endometriosis.

If you’re concerned about irregular periods, make an appointment to see your GP. If you experience bleeding between periods or any other symptoms that you’re not sure about, its always a good idea to get a medical opinion on what could be causing them.

Remember though, that if you’ve only just started your periods, your cycle could be irregular for a few months. Similarly, if you’re between the ages of 45-55, your period could be irregular as you transition towards menopause

Natural Remedies For Bringing On Your Period

If your cycle is irregular, there are natural remedies that you can try at home to bring on your period and help to settle your cycle each month.

Relaxation

Stress is a huge factor when it comes to irregular and missed periods. The affects of stress on the body have been studied at length and researchers are pretty clear on what impact it can have on the menstrual cycle.

This 2015 study found that high stress could be linked directly to irregular periods, and this post-pandemic study done in 2022 backs this up, with 54% of women reporting changes in their menstrual cycles during the peak of Covid. 50% say they experienced a change with their cycle length, 34% in the length of their period and 50% in PMS symptoms. The study also found that those with higher than average perceived stress scores were more likely to experience longer and heavier periods too.

Trying to reduce stress can play a major role in regulating your cycle. Taking time out to relax and recover is essential. Try yoga, meditation or going for a gentle walk., Practising self care is vital to reduce stress and bring your periods back on track.

Warm Bath

Taking a warm bath is our go-to piece of advice when it comes to combating symptoms of PMS and period cramps. But it might also be an effective way to help regulate your cycle too.

Anecdotally, some women swear by taking time out for a bath really helps them to regulate their cycle. This could be down to the sensation of the warm water and the fact that you’re giving yourself time and space to relax. Plus, when you lie back into the water, your muscles also relax and soften, helping to ease emotional stress and increase blood flow to the abdomen. Always worth booking a night in the tub, we say!

Sex

Believe it or not, but there is some evidence to suggest that having sex can help to regulate your cycle. Studies like this one have found that the menstrual cycle is supported by the immune system- the lower the levels of inflammation are in the body, the more regulated our hormones and therefore our menstrual cycles are.

Supporting studies, like this one, have also found that inflammation varies throughout our cycles, reaching its highest level during ovulation.

This study also concluded that women who are sexually active are more likely to have lower levels of inflammation, which leads to a more regular cycle overall.

There are also theories that having an orgasm can help too-  as large amounts of oxytocin is released into the body, stress is reduced and your cycle can become more regular. Orgasms are thought to be able to reduce symptoms of PMS too.

Birth Control

Some hormonal birth control methods can also help to regulate your cycle too. The combined pill is made with artificial versions of oestrogen and progesterone and is taken every day for 21 consecutive days. Then you stop taking the pill for 7 days, during which time you have a period.

There are also some contraceptive pills that you take every day for the entire 28 days of your cycle, in a specific order. The last 7 pills of each cycle are inactive, and while you take these you will have your period.

When you first start taking the pill your period might be a little irregular at first, but it should settle down within a month or two and become fairly predictable.
